The conference aims to highlight the institutional establishment of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Bologna in the late 13th century, event which marks a turning point in the role of philosophy within the Regnum Italiae. Bologna quickly became a major center for the study of philosophy in Central and Northern Italy, with figures like Gentile da Cingoli, Antonio da Parma, and Giordano da Trento shaping a distinctive intellectual tradition. These masters demonstrated familiarity with the Parisian and Oxford environments while also developing a strong focus on logic and natural philosophy, medicine and the scientific disciplines, including mathematics, optics, and astronomy. They lectured on Aristotle, commented on Avicenna’s Canon, and debated perspective and cognition, influencing both university and conventual settings.
