In his text “Abendgespräch”, Heidegger cites the entire dialogue between Zhuangzi and Huizi from chapter 26 of the book Zhuangzi. The main theme of this dialogue is “die Notwendigkeit des Unnötigen (無用之用, wuyongzhiyong)”. Heidegger uses the thought of the necessity of the unnecessary in order to demonstrate the relationship between thinking (earth) and all other actions (space). This presentation will show how Heidegger was influenced and inspired by this Daoist thought.
